You know those moments when you can't work out what to read next? Where each book you start isn't quite the one? That's where I was a few hours ago. And I chose Jessica Park's Flat-Out Celeste. I knew I'd chuckle. I knew I'd feel empathy. I knew I'd feel awkwardness. I knew there would be tears. So therefore I knew it was the book to choose. I wasn't wrong.

Having read the first two books, (several times) I truly loved how this installment moved Matt and Julie's story forward too. Because I 'needed' to know where they were up to. That's Park's fault because she writes characters who win your heart. Every. Time. And sweet, beautiful, dysfunctional Celeste has owned my heart since I first met her. And to see her grow into an adult, with all her intelligence and quirk, was such a heartwarming and heart-wrenching journey. One that captivated me from the first page to the last.

And you get to meet Justin, who from the very first email, made me smile and giggle. He was just so adorable. His heart a perfect match for our Celeste.

So, this book is one I highly recommend. Jessica Park's writing is simple and wonderful. She digs deep into emotional waters, yet still manages to offer levity and joy. Her strength of storytelling pulls you in, enthralls, and rewards your effort to turn page after page. Prepare your heart to fall in love with two more main characters. Prepare your mind to be consumed. Prepare your soul to be enlightened and tugged. Prepare to love this story.

What I loved about this is how it manages to balance some pretty heavy themes with laugh out loud moments and times of swoon. The beginning started off a bit heavy and I was worried the book was going to be a bit of a downer but quickly I found that not to be the case. There are many of Jessica Park's classic laugh out loud moments scattered throughout the book.

I do think this book works better if you have read Flat-Out Love. I don't want to give spoilers for this book but I think some of the smaller plot lines would work best for someone who has read and enjoyed that book. However, you could enjoy this book on a simpler level without first reading that one. The essentials are summed up in the book.

Celeste is a quirky character that many of us fell in love with in Flat-Out Love. She has retained all of that quirkiness and has grown into a young lady trying to find her place in the world as well as self acceptance. We go with her on this journey through her senior year of high school. She is achingly lonely but doesn't know how to change that. The world has sent her too many messages that her quirkiness is too extreme for anyone to accept as anything more than a casual acquaintance. Luckily, some people and events occur to try and change her mind.

I adored the new character of Justin. He is delightfully quirky, like Celeste, and I was totally charmed by him as she was. I love the way they center each other and accept each other's uniqueness. I also loved the way Jessica Park wrote about the smaller and more subtle ways he gets Celeste and cares for her. I also loved the small every day things she does for him. These two together brought out the swoons. I love when authors write instances of romances that are good examples of what people should emulate. Too often people accept less and maybe it is because they don't know what a good relationship looks like. These two show a relationship done right.

I will say one thing I found interesting. This book has instances of "the Grand Gesture". By the grand gesture I am referring to those super big romantic gestures that populate books, TV and Movies designed to make us swoon. However, I am not the biggest fan of "The Grand Gesture" because anyone can throw out a grand gesture. These are not things that make relationships work. Sometimes, even, they become devices in books that take attention away from the fact that not much else is shown as to why a relationship works. I am a fan of the every day little things that couples do and go through together. These are the things that ultimately make me believe in any relationship be it romantic, familial or friendship. So while there are instances of "the Grand Gesture" there were many more instances of the everyday little and small connections depicted that made me believe in the relationships. So that allowed me to sit back and enjoy the grand gesture much more than I usually do.
There are a few authors I trust implicitly with my heart. Jessica Park is one of them. Wherever I am....when I find out one of her books went live? I one-click and read IMMEDIATELY. Flat-Out Celeste was no exception. I was engrossed from the beginning. We all love Celeste from Flat-Out Love, but being in her mind is a whole new ballgame. I was a little concerned that I couldn't connect with her character enough, but the perfectly woven tale about a young woman struggling to find her true identity hit the mark. BULLS-EYE! The evolution of Celeste is phenomenal, heart-wrenching and addicting. Parks ability to write emotionally driven tales is like no other and by the middle of the book you feel as if you truly know Celeste. You are rooting for her, and crying with her throughout the entire book!

But lets talk about the romance. Holymygosh, the romance. It was a double-decker rollercoaster ride of romance!! I was so excited that Matt and Julie played such a pivotal part in the story. But they weren't the stars. Justin and Celeste were cute and quirky...and totally swoon-worthy. I didn't think that this story would grab me like Flat-Out Love did. I knew I would love it, but I didn't know I would FREAKING LOVE IT as much as I do.

I love elevator scenes. love love love them. and all the sweet texting. and the drunken decisions. and christmas trees. and everything.
