Love Evolution Brutal Strength Book 1 edition by Michelle Mankin Contemporary Romance eBooks

Love Evolution is a great start to the Brutal Strength / Black Cat Records series, I loved the characters, the excitement, the reluctant romance and, of course, the music!

I love it when stories manage to mix romance and music, and Mankin definitely managed that in Love Evolution. Finding herself all alone, Avery was ready to do anything to catch a break and find a position as guitarist in a group. When her manager told her Brutal Strength didn’t want a female guitarist, she dressed as a boy, cut her hair, and went to the audition. Of course, after she got the job, there were some awkward moments between her and the lead-singer of the group, Marcus.

Because Avery was a great guitarist, she didn’t get her job out of pity or anything else, however, Marcus felt weirdly good in Avery’s company, and that didn’t always sit so well with him. Love Evolution has a lot of humorous scenes, because Avery was instantly attracted to Marcus, but had to keep everything under a tight lid, as a male guitarist, she could not be seen fawning over the lead singer of the band.

The character development is very well done in Love Evolution, Marcus has a difficult past, including drug use and a stint in a rehab, but he is working very hard to do without. Avery and her brilliant lyrics help Marcus get his song-writing focus back, and in just a few weeks, they have new songs for a full album. That, coupled with the friendships, the surroundings of a band, and very strong family ties made Love Evolution a very good read.

Written in third person point of view, past tense, and with a lot of direct dialogues, Love Evolution was narrated in a way that helped me get to know the characters very well, and I definitely look forward to seeing more of these characters as the series unfolds.

Love Evolution Brutal Strength Book 1 edition by Michelle Mankin Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

I immediately felt for the MC, Avery, who deals with loss at the beginning of the story. Not only did she lose a brother but their promising career in music together. This event sends her on an unexpected journey to find where she fits in in the world of music without her twin. In doing so, she ends up trying out for guitarist of Brutal Strength, one of the biggest rock bands in the country. But the new position comes at a price--a price for Avery to give up her identity as a woman.

Pretending to be a man, she wins the position, but slowly, quietly, she falls in love with the lead singer, Marcus, and finds that she must finally choose between keeping her new gig or the love of her life.

The book was a great, fun read!!!! It's very obvious that the author has a strong background in the music business or took great care in researching the topic to make the experience extremely authentic. The love story is cute, appropriate for young readers, and the end scene gave me goosebumps!!

I would recommend this to readers who enjoy chic lit with a rock and roll twist.
I'm looking forward to the next book!

Did I enjoy this book I did enjoy this book. It took a little while to get into, but I was glad I stuck with it until the end.

At first, I found this story to be a bit contrived and the early scenes between Avery and Marcus just didn't work for me. Avery lost her twin brother to a mobster. In order to escape herself - and make enough money to pay him off - she becomes a guy to audition for the lead guitarist spot with Brutal Strength. Marcus has been down on himself, just out of rehab and not finding his muse. In Avery, the guy, Marcus finds his love for music as he and Avery, the guy, begin writing songs together. This is a great premise - intriguing, probably romantic, fun.

Then we get to where the two "guys" are hanging out and getting to know each other. These scenes did not work for me and almost made me give this book a 2 star rating. I just can't see two guys going to a farmer's market, picking out bread, cheese, and fruit and have a picnic together. This would not happen. I just don't see it at all. Also, I don't see two guys talking about emotional issues and their pasts as much as Marcus and Avery, the guy, did. All that they did together I saw as a guy and a girl. It didn't work as two guys, for me.

However, as the story went on, I was hooked. I wanted to see what would happen if Avery revealed herself to Marcus. I wanted to know what happened with the mobster. Were there surprises? Yes. Were there unbelievable events? Yes. Was I entertained? Yes.

Would I recommend it I would recommend this book if you like the NA genre and books about rock stars.

Will I read it again I will not but I will read the next two books in this series - Love Revolution and Love Resolution.

(I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)
